World Book Day 2017: Fantastic Mr Fox

2/3/2017

Little E is Fantastic Mr Fox
Boggis, Bunce, and Bean
One fat, one short, one lean!
These horrible crooks
So different in looks
Are nonetheless equally mean!

From Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl

As you have probably guessed Little E chose to be Fantastic Mr Fox for this year's World Book Day. And the reason was pretty special; it is my favourite book.

Yes, really it is. When it comes down to it and I'm pressed to choose my all time favourite book it would win hands down (closely followed by The Lord of the Rings trilogy, cause they are clearly so similar...). As a child I would read the whole book before bed, sometimes twice. I just couldn't get enough of it and it is a pivotal memory of my childhood.

My Roald Dahl collection survived parental divorce, various moves, Art college and settling down to start a family. Of course Fantastic Mr Fox was the first 'proper' book I read Little E from my own tatty 30year old copy.
So what makes Fantastic Mr Fox stand the test of time? Well he is just so damn charismatic! You can't help but love him and root for him to outsmart those hideous famers. And of course he is the underdog, who doesn't love an underdog. They have all that machinery, guns and there is three of them but he just has his cunning to go on. George Cloony was perfectly cast to voice him in the 2009 stop motion animated movie. Loved it.
Little I is the owl and the pussycat
Now I must not forget Little I on World Book Day.

Her pre-school dressed up as nursery rhyme characters for the day and obviously she wanted to be a cat, her favourite animal. So we went for the owl and the pussycat and stitched an owl onto her shoulder like a parrot.

We was very pleased with her costume plus after spending all my budget on an elaborate fox outfit this was very thrifty as we had all the components.

Little E has suggested we read Fantastic Mr Fox to Little I tonight which is a fantastic idea and the prefect way to round off World Book Day 2017.

This weekend I'll be in the loft getting own the rest of  my Roald Dahl collection so we can enjoy so many more crazy, imaginative, vivid stories which have stood the test of time.

(The Fantastic Mr Fox outfit was actually brilliant value and looked like I had spent so much more than I did. The costume includes the jacket with attached waistcoat, neckerchief and mask. The tail is attached to the jacket using velco. I took it off and stuffed it with some wadding to make it more 3D then stitched it on so it would not fall off. All we had to get were some brown trousers and shoes to complete the look. Plus Little E wore one of her own tshirts underneath. You can buy the costume direct from Amazon with free delivery for Prime Members using the link below)
