I've always been super careful with my phones but since having the kids they have gotten seriously abused. I recently upgraded to an iPhone 6 and I managed to smash the screen AND the camera lense within a week of each other. So I decided it was time to armour up my case and the lovely people at Griffin sent me two of their Survivor range cases to try out.
I was sent the Survivor Summit (£34.99) and Survivor Journey (£24.99) cases to try out on my phone.
The Journey is an ultra thin, rigid case which snaps onto your phone. It provides 6.6-foot (2-meter) drop protection. So even 6ft tall Husband could drop it safely. The Impact Dispersion System inside suspends your phone inside the case and keeps it safe from drop damage.
The outside is rubberlike which makes it very easy to grip and far less likely to slide out of your hand. Overall the phone isn't bulky and can easily be slipped into your pocket or bag. The case wraps around the very edge of the screen but the main screen is unprotected.
The case looks good too. A simple black design with a colourful stripe which comes in a variety of different colours. The camera and flash are well protected by the depth of the case backing and the photography hasn't been impaired by any shadowing which is really important as I am constantly photographing the kids.
This is a great case for everyday use and I have been using it over the past few weeks including our Christmas trip to France. It has protected my phone really well from the general bumps and knocks it receives with two youngsters around! I still have to be careful of the touchscreen but because of the non-slip case I fumble and drop it a lot less. Overall I feel my phone is safe and secure.
The Summit is another level when it comes to phone protection. This beast is perfect if you spend a lot of time outside in all weathers. In fact this case is a sealed shell is designed to prevent rain, dirt, mud, snow and splashes from getting in and harming your phone. All controls the controls are covered. Plus speaker/microphone membranes and headphone ports are water-resistant.
To seal the phone you slide on the Summit’s ultra-clear sliding screen shield which locks on to protect your phone’s touchscreen.
The Summit has 4 layers of protection: The outer layer resists scuffs and wear. The shatterproof shell prevents dents. The silicone inner ring absorbs drop forces. And the hard screen shield locks on to keep your touchscreen safe. These additional layers of protection do make the case thicker than the Journey model and wouldn't slip into a pocket as well. It has the same anti-slip coating on the edges making it 'stick' to your hand similar to the Journey.
The case has 10foot (3meter) drop protection which is very high! Higher than I am ever likely to drop it from! And it looks great - you certainly won't lose it in this shocking pink colour (which I love!) but it also comes in plain black, blue or white.
The case also comes with a clip which allows it to be securely attached to a belt or bag. The clip also rotates and locks open to prop Summit at the perfect angle for watching videos or making FaceTime calls. With the clip on the back the phone becomes very chunky and more industrial.
Day to day I do not need this level of protection from a phone case but it is perfect for a muddy day at the farm or a trip to the beach where I need to worry about the phone getting wet or sand getting into the ports. It will be a great addition to an energetic day out or any rugged family activities we undertake. It would also make the perfect case for any tradesman - in fact my electrician Brother has one to keep his phone safe on building sites.
I was sent these cases for review but all opinions are my own.
