Photography is a wonderful hobby. It’s accessible, a lot of fun, and can even lead to you exploring some parts of the world that you previously would never have dreamed of. Photography can lead to many career paths as well, but it’s also a great hobby that you can indulge in at almost any time of the day.

However, improving your photography can sometimes be a little difficult if you don’t have much practice or advice. Lessons can be relatively expensive and time-consuming, so they aren’t the ideal solution. But with a bit of work and these tips, you can easily improve your eye for photography.

Snap pictures every day

Whether it’s pictures of your kids having fun in the sun or pictures of your cooking, snap some pictures every day. It’s a great way to build up a collection of photographs that you can later use for whatever purposes you want, but it’s also good to keep practising. As you look back at your older photos, you may notice that you use different techniques, lighting tricks or even angles. Building up a large collection is a fantastic way to get more experience and ultimately learn faster.

Take your camera everywhere

Thanks to the incredible quality of smartphone cameras these days, it’s possible to take professional pictures without carrying around expensive equipment. If your phone has a quality camera, then keep it in your pocket and don’t be afraid to bring it out and snap some pictures of anything that tickles your fancy. Perhaps it’s a statue you like the look of, or maybe it’s a unique formation of clouds that are hovering over your head. Whatever it is, snap it and save it for later!

Gather inspiration

Whether it’s online resources such as Pinterest or professional shooting locations offered by a company like 1st Option, there are plenty of sources where you can gather inspiration. Professional shoot locations are particularly inspiring because you can learn a lot from the arrangement of decor, the lighting and the many applications that a shoot location can have.

Study professional techniques

Professionals know what they’re doing. After all, they wouldn’t be paid exorbitant amounts for their photographs if they didn’t. Study professional techniques such as composition, lighting and how to highlight your subject. They may sound like small things, but you’d be surprised at how much better your photographs will become and how much more attention you’ll pay to smaller details. To up your game try editing your photos in Lightroom. See more about Lightroom pre-sets and how to give your photos a professional look.

Getting an eye for photography requires a lot of practice. You’ll need to constantly take pictures and look for inspiration, and you’ll also have to study professional techniques if you want to upgrade your pictures to the next level. Whatever you do, never give up. Always carry a phone with you and take pictures of anything that you like the look of. Sooner or later, you’ll start to pick up on small changes and details that have evolved over time. Before you know it, you'll be snapping up beautiful pictures that could be sold as pieces of art.

I would love to learn how to take my own photos as I have to rely on a photographer which is pretty expensive. I like the idea of practicing your technique that is a good shout x
