Our home is the one place in the world where we can go to be by ourselves, close the front door and forget about the world around us. But, have you ever thought about how your home décor can help your health?

While adding bright colours and new furniture can help to make you feel good, adding items like blinds from Direct Blinds can be helpful in lots of ways. Not only can blinds can help you save on electricity costs, energy prices are still high despite a slight fall, by letting in natural light, they can also help with your health because natural light is good for you. Here's six way's letting the light shine in can help your wellbeing:

Better Focus

It’s been shown that exposure to natural light can help when it comes to concentration and focus. So, if you work from home, or if you’re trying to get motivated to get ready to go out or clean the house, then raise those blinds or open the curtains and let the light in.

Less Stress and Anxiety

In a world where stress has become something we’ve all become accustomed to, letting natural light flow through your house could help release your inner calm. Exposure to natural light has been found to help people with managing their emotions when they’re feeling wound up.

Reduce Blood Pressure

Speaking of stress, it’s not good for your blood pressure at all. Natural light can be extremely beneficial for your blood pressure. This is because sunlight has been found to alter the messenger module, nitric oxide, within the skin and blood, which can help to reduce blood pressure.

Helps Immune System

This may sound a little far-fetched, but it’s true. As our immune systems rely on T-cells to fight foreign pathogens, letting as much sunlight into your home as possible can help because it can wake them up (especially the vitamin D that sunlight produces).

Reduces SAD

SAD stands for Seasonal Affective Disorder, which is a form of depression that happens when the seasons change. This is most notable when we move into the winter and the days become shorter, and has been linked to the lack of sunlight that we are exposed to. Therefore, allowing as much sunlight as possible into our homes is the perfect way to help tackle this, because who wants to live in a world of darkness.

Helps with Happiness

erall though, it can help to increase your happiness. This is because sunlight causes our brains to produce serotonin. This hormone is extremely good for us as it can help to improve our moods, which it does by helping to relieve pain, provide energy and make us feel well-rested, and much happier in general.

Of course, having a home filled with natural light is perfect when you want to sell too. But, for the sake of your well-being, let the light flow through your home at all times and you’re sure to reap the benefits.

I really love Winter, but the lack of daylight is the one thing that gets to me, especially as our flat does not get much natural light. I try to get out for a walk every day in Winter as much as I can.

Our house is arranged so we get as much natural light as possible, and also we get outside for at least an hour a day even if it's a walk around the block.
It makes such a difference to my well being.

You're right, I definitely feel much happier at home with the beautiful sunshine pouring in, however unfortunately it does show up the dust too.

these are all so true and just this week, with a weeks uninterrupted sunshine at the end of a long dark swedish winter, I can already feel myself getting a little bit less lethargic and grumpy! The sun has worked wonders

I like to be able to control how much daylight comes in, in case I feel dazzled.

I suffer from seasonal depression and light and light therapy really does work. It was fantastic these last couple of weeks, with the warm weather, as I could sit outside for a coffee etc. But now the weather has changed I've noticed my energy has zapped with it again :(
